• Mold or mildew concentrated at the fence base. Schluter’s KERDI is mold-resistant, but the fleece backing traps organic matter if the drainage plane is blocked. In Huntington Beach’s marine layer mornings, this shows up as black streaking that wipes off the membrane but returns within weeks.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: clear debris from visible Schluter drainage channels, verify downspouts aren’t dumping directly at fence footings, and look for the orange KERDI imprint to confirm what system you have. What goes wrong fast: membrane welding requires a Schluter KERDI-FIX or heat-weld process that, done poorly, traps water and voids any remaining warranty. The fleece-backed membrane also demands specific mortar consistency; too wet and it slides, too dry and it won’t bond to the substrate.

We don’t recommend DIY on Schluter-integrated fence systems because the failure mode is invisible until structural damage shows. A breached membrane at one post can wick moisture three panels down.
